Helen Beard
Pretty much in love with Helen Beard’s ceramics. I could go for a dish, a vase, a bowl, and all of the whimsy wrapped up in ‘em.
Flirtation is a game we play, a dance for which everyone knows the moves....
– Why We Flirt
U-tah.
Did I mention I went to Sundance for 5 days? For work? I was really excited to meet professional video-game player, Jonathan Wendel, and some celebrities, though they don’t do all that much for me. Lots of party-hopping, running around with boat loads of video and camera equipment, drinking cocktails at noon, passing out of business cards, and a whole lot of adrenaline rushing film-related...
My Little Underground →
Great stuff here—just look for yourself.
Picture This
Gosh, I wish this were on American non-cable TV. And Martin Parr is a judge? Does it really get better?
Things are gorgeous, he often claimed, because they die. The porcelain rose is...
– In Praise of Melancholy
Night Life by Laurie Anderson
Boy, this book looks great: “For the last year I’ve been on the road with a solo performance. Every night another theater, another hotel room. Gradually my dreams became wild, vivid, more and more relentless. Headless singing squirrels, vast empty spaces, bizarre clatterings and invasions. My own dark and private theatre was slowly taking over. I began to draw these dreams literally out of...
Birds of Princeton
I’ve never seen swarms of black birds like I did today when we pulld into our destination location in Princeton, New Jersey for a work shoot. Hovering, landing, taking off, pecking at the ground and then exploding into an ominous blanket of black like a moving toxic cloud. They flew in groups from yard to yard oblivious of the cacophany caused by their wildly flapping scenes. Oh! What a...
Live Wire Farm Timber
Gorgeous spoons, hooks, napkin rings (and photography!) from Live Wire Farms. Christmas 2008? Yes, please.
Celebrity spotting.
I’m notably bad at spotting celebrities in New York, but constantly have the feeling someone I see reminds me of someone else. This morning on the R-train uptown at 9:45 a.m.? A Woodie Guthrie look-alike, tin lunchbox, beat-up cowboy hat, boots, and all.
Thomas Flechtner + Dashwood Books
Felt like I’d unearthed a treasure chest today upon making the inadvertant discovery of Dashwood Books. How I have not discovered this place before I do not know, but it’s a goldmine of great photography books. One of my finds was the German photographer, Thomas Flechtner. I covet his two books, which strike me as carrying an unbearable lightness, Snow and Bloom.
birds of a feather
Dad: Youngna, I have to tell you that there are so many birds pecking on the feeder and on the snow...Just like in your photo, though not as many.
Loft Cube
“What could a temporary, minimalistic domicile look like, to suit people of a nomadic lifestyle, living for short periods of time in large cities and dense urban areas, offering both sanctuary and social structure, and where might such temporary dwellings be built?” Conceived in Berlin by Studio Aisslinger. I’ll take one Loft Cube for modern living, please.
Gastronomic Realizations
Youngna: i was thinking of this little taqueria called Mole on Allen
Audrey: mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
Youngna: okay, perfect
Audrey: i have such a craving for mexican. I always think: mexicans eat mexican food every day. Why can't I?
Dilation
The optometrist dilated my eyes today (all healthy, thanks), so when I got back to work all was blurry, particularly the computer screen. What to do? Well, put on my Yoko Ono costume and have my coworkers send me large-fonted emails…
2008!
New Year’s Eve was wild. Vodka tonics, balloons, dots, cats, cookbooks, bean dip, the wild throwing of paper towels, inhibition entirely lost. Perhaps we were casting off regrets with a dash of bitters, trying to ease tensions in a loud and lofty room, bring to the forefront latent emotions, dance the night away. In any case, ‘08 is starting off with much more than a tremor. 2007...
